‘SEA’ WAVES TO BENEFIT THE INDUSTRY AND CONSUMERS:
Mr. Sanjeev Asthana, the President of the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA), recently spoke on CNBC TV18, regarding an MoU signed with the US-based non-profit organization TechnoServe. While emphasizing the importance of enhancing edible oil fortification, Mr. Sanjeev Asthana shared, “With India experiencing micronutrient deficiency, fortification is a key tool employed by various sectors. And SEA is the ideal association to drive this initiative forward in India.” Also highlighted TechnoServe’s unique program called ‘Millers for Nutrition,’ which brings best practices for fortification to the forefront.
While speaking to Ms. Manisha Gupta of CNBC TV 18, he also states that the US pays a premium for non-GM soybean meal and suggested that India has an excellent opportunity. “Therefore, our recommendation to the government is to only explore how non-GM soybean meal could be included in the BTA.”
Talking further, he was asked about an issue with packaging smaller than 1 litre, which SEA has brought to the government’s attention. He emphasized the need for consumers to understand the quantities they are purchasing. He stated, “The government should reconsider its order and aim to standardize the grammage so that industry players operate under the same rules, ultimately benefiting consumers.”
When asked about palm oil imports, he predicted an increase, saying, “I estimate that not only will palm oil imports rise, but palm oil will also regain its market share. The import of palm oil should increase to between 1 and 1.5 lakh tonnes per month.” In conclusion, he mentioned that this year, oil consumption is expected to grow alongside tapered oil prices.
‘SEA’ continues to advocate for policies that benefit industry and consumers — forging a future that’s healthier, sustainable, and globally aligned.
